Good breeding shines

- PETER STAPLES

IMPECCABLY bred filly Our Long Sali delivered one of the most impressive performances by a juvenile in years when she gave rivals a galloping lesson to win the Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1200m in Launceston last night.

Our Long Sali (Needs Further-Tycoon Sali) settled fourth in the one-out line with cover while interstate invader Cape Cardinal set a solid tempo as the well-backed Triple Strip (Jason Maskiell) was buried on the rails at the back of the field.

The leader was collared by Magic Whaler at the top of the home straight but when Craig Newitt called on Our Long Sali to extend she quickly hauled in the leaders and went on to score by over two lengths from Tiesto with Triple Strip a closeup third.

Our Long Sali is prepared at Brighton by Stuart Gandy who has said all along that she could be special.

“We’ve known for a while that we had a fairly good filly in our midst and tonight I think she showed what we all thought she could do,” Gandy said.

“Provided she pulls up well from this run she will go to the Gold Sovereign and that will be a good test fort her.”

The filly is owned by a syndicate put together by Joe O’Neill from Prime Thoroughbreds.

“This is the first horse I have bought for Stuart but it won’t be the last,” O’Neill said. THE Barry Campbell-trained Jubilance ($19) caused a boilover when she scored a convincing win in the 3YO Magic Millions Classic over 1200m.

With comeback jockey Jason Maskiell aboard, Jubi- lance settled fourth while the heavily backed Black Jaguar ($3.20) led with the favourite City of Dreams ($1.80) content to trail the leader.

When the leader started to tire well into the home straight City of Dreams forged to the lead and kicked clear but she had no answer to the powerful finish of Jubilance.

Jubilance hit the line almost a length clear of City of Dreams with Take of the Fox over two lengths away third.

“This filly was a late nomination but I thought she was fit and probably had enough ability to run in the first three so we accepted for the race,” Campbell said.

“She’s always shown us a bit at home but her recent form was below par but tonight she was ridden well and delivered what we all hoped she would this preparation.

“I’m still quite confident she will be better over more ground but for now we will concentrate on freshening her up for the 3YO Classic on Launceston Cup day.”
