Twin Ovals may build on JLT match success

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

THE Twin Ovals could host another JLT match next year along with some of North Melbourne’s AFLW games.

That’s the hope of TSL Tigers president Paul Gadomski, who rated last Saturday’s North Melbourne-Melbourne JLT Community Series match at the Twins a success.

The only disappointment was that torrential rain in the morning kept the crowd to 1957.

The Kangaroos ranked the surface better than Etihad Stadium, and AFL experts went one better.

“The AFL agronomists that came down to check the ground earlier in the week made the comment that it’s the best surface in Australia,” Gadomski said.

“If you saw the amount of rain that was here in the morning, the surface was immaculate for the game. The players and everyone would have been very impressed.”

The $400,000 election pledge of both major parties to fund long-awaited infrastructure upgrades at the Kingston venue was music to the ears of Gadomski.

“With the funding an- nouncement that the Liberals and Labor have given us to upgrade our seating on the bank and to put in AFL standard interchange boxes, that gives us the ability to bid for AFLW roster games,” he said.

“With North Melbourne coming into that competition next year with a big Tassie contingent, they will be playing some of their home games here.

“And because their season is this time of year, Blundstone or UTas can’t be used because they’ve got cricket pitches in the middle, it would be good to pick up one or two of those games.

“After the success of the JLT Community Series game, they might be keen to schedule regular ones here, which would be fantastic for the community.”
