Sandy Bay seals top spot with 10-shot triumph

SANDY Bay won the battle of the top two sides with a 10-shot win over Kingboroug­h in the Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant on Thursday.

Robyn Leggett took an early lead against Leonie Price. Despite some fine attempts by Price to reduce the deficit, Leggett had all the answers win- ning by 12 shots. Chris Dowl opened up a good lead against Greta Murray and seemed in control. But Murray scored 10 shots in three ends to draw level with only three ends remaining. Dowl fought back with a two and then successful­ly removed a Kingboroug­h bowl to score a six on the penultimat­e end to win by five shots. While Helen Barnes provided some close bowls for Sandy Bay, Yvonne Buckley was unable to prevent Kathleen Page jumping out to a nine-shot lead after three ends, eventually winning by seven.

Sorell had a solid 31-shot win over Buckingham. Sandra Hawksley had a convincing win over Alison Chamberlai­n, winning by 26 shots. Leona Smith had a close contest with Jeanette Lane. Lane led by two shots after 17 ends but Smith won three of the last four ends, picking up 10 shots to win by seven. Buckingham’s only win came from June Guy, who picked up four shots on the final two ends to defeat Jan Cowan. Guy’s win ensured Buckingham held on to fourth place on the ladder.

Dover RSL stopped Howrah from finishing in the top four with a 16-shot away win, thanks to a great win by Carol Bannister, who defeated Lynne McDougall by 17 shots. Barb Liddington and Rosie Geeves played out a draw. Howrah won on the other rink, with Charon Foster four shots in front of Sharon Delaney.

Claremont had a 37-shot win over Brighton. Rae Freestone beat Val Lukasek by 24 shots and Gate Coleman overcame Judy Williams by 22. Brighton’s Sue Grant beat Rose Ryan by nine. Rosny Park defeated New Norfolk by 32 shots. Gaylene Ridgeway beat Di Jones by 22 and Ailsa Milburn beat Leonie Hyland by 10. Chris McGrath and Carol Banks-Smith fought out a thrilling draw.
