Crowds tuck in at diverse Taste

- ROGER HANSON

A RECORD crowd of more than 20,000 tucked into A Taste of Huon at Ranelagh over two days of the long weekend.

Event president Rosemary Bennett estimated yesterday’s crowd of more than 8000 followed 12,000 on Sunday.

“It was fabulous, we are more than excited with how it all has gone,” Mrs Bennett said.

She said the annual event at the Ranelagh Showgrounds had featured a diverse display of produce from about 100 stallholders.

Lisa Britzman and David Peck, from the sustainable 21ha farm Campo de Flori at Glen Huon, won the award for best non-food stall.

Their stall typified the diverse range of produce coming from the Huon Valley.

Campo de Flori not only sells lavender in bunches but has added value by creating a culinary lavender for a wide range of food options.

“The lavender is always a big hit,” Ms Britzman said.

Olive oil from the farm was so popular it sold out at the event.

Last year the farm grew about 500g of the precious spice saffron, selling to local outlets.

“We have developed 100mg packs that come with a recipe card, so consumers can try it and if they like it grab a 1g jar.

“We are also working with a local cider producer to develop a saffron pear cider,” Ms Britzman said.

“Diversity is the key for a small producer like us.”

She said the Taste had been a great opportunity to meet new people.
