Angel wings her way to Mona

-

MONA will have a popular new attraction for one night only next week, with US indie-folk star Angel Olsen set to perform in the Nolan Gallery.

Now based in North Carolina, Olsen’s talents were first spotted when she was performing in St Louis coffee houses as a teenager, and she was soon scoring invitations to record and tour with the likes of Bonnie “Prince’’ Billy and the Cairo Gang.

In 2010 she released her debut EP of quirky indie-folk tunes,

Strange Cacti, before her more upbeat 2012 debut album Half Way

Home captivated listeners and drew rave reviews from critics.

But Olsen’s real breakthrough came in 2014 with the release of her rockier second album, Burn

Your Fire for No Witness, which made the Billboard 200 and established her as one of America’s most talented emerging songwriters and lyricists.

Olsen’s career then went to yet another level in 2016 with the release of her acclaimed third album, My Woman,

which showcased her timeless voice and elicited comparisons to everyone from Stevie Nicks to Neil Young.

To coincide with the release of a single from My Woman, Sister, in late 2016, Olsen embarked on a sold-out Australian tour that included a visit to Hobart.

She’s returning to the state next week as part of her most intimate Australian tour to date, performing in boutique theatres and art galleries across the country to promote her latest release, Phases — a revealing and intimate collection of B-sides, rarities and demos recorded over the past few years, which came out in November.

Angel Olsen performs in Mona’s Nolan Gallery from 8pm on Wednesday. Tickets are $45, $40 concession, go to www.mona.net.au for bookings.
