Schraner eyes national win after taking Tassie title

ROSNY Park’s Lee Schraner is hoping to go back to back as national men’s singles champion of champions after defending his Tasmanian title at Kingboroug­h on Monday.

Schraner defeated Launceston’s Peter Zoon by six shots and the North West’s Cameron Griffiths by seven shots to take the title.

New Norfolk’s 16-year-old Lauren Banks won the Tasmanian women’s open title defeating Launceston’s Denise Middap by nine shots and Ul- verstone’s Jenny Grandfield by 11 shots. IN THE southern open singles champion of champions event at the Kingboroug­h Indoor Bowls Centre last Friday, Schraner defeated Derwent City’s Peter Bannister by six shots and Banks beat Bucking- ham’s Malinda Howell by six shots. The southern B Grade champion of champions events saw Kingboroug­h’s Gavin Cleary win the men’s title by four shots over Rosny Park’s Graeme Rouleston and St John’s Park’s Meekie Salter won the women’s title beating Brighton’s Colleen Rusk by 19. IN THE final round of Bowls Tasmania South’s Super Pairs, Rosny Park consolidat­ed top spot with an 18-1 and 10-2 rout of Howrah, Claremont defeated Brighton 8-5 and 20-7 and Sandy Bay beat Buckingham 4-10, 9-8 and 1-0 in a tiebreaker. Beltana won on a forfeit by Glenorchy Rodman.

Finals will be played at the Howrah Indoor Centre tomorrow night with Beltana and Howrah playing off for third position followed by the grand final between Rosny Park and Buckingham. THE Tasmanian men’s and women’s triples championsh­ips were held at Kingboroug­h on Saturday and Sunday.

Rosny Park’s Lee Schraner and Mick Sweeney teamed with Glenorchy Rodman’s Grant Allford to win the men’s title back to back from a Northern team of Alan Gamble, Josh Appleyard and Tim Douce by two shots. Trailing by two and one down in the head, Schraner played a huge conversion shot with the last bowl to claim victory.

In the women’s championsh­ips, a North West combinatio­n of Gail Thow, Sharon Beavis and Roseanne HowardSmit­h defeated Sandy Bay’s Helen Lester, Di Peck and Yvonne Buckley by four shots. SORELL won through to the grand final of Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant on Tuesday with a nine-shot win over Kingboroug­h. Jan Cowan was too good for Greta Murray, winning by 16 shots, and Sandra Hawksley had a one-shot win over Kathleen Page. Kingboroug­h’s Leonie Price defeated Leona Smith by eight shots. Sorell meets Sandy Bay in the grand final at Rosny Park today.
