Sentimental Dream ‘now a racehorse’

- PETER STAPLES

LONGFORD trainer Bill Ryan believes his handy sprinter Sentimental Dream has found a new lease on life with his win in a 0-62 handicap over 1400m convincing Ryan that the gelding is on track to finally realise his potential.

It followed an equally impressive win two weeks earlier over 1200m at the same venue.

Ryan said the turnaround in form has to do with the gelding’s change of attitude.

“The transformation in this horse this time in is quite amazing and I just hope he has finally learnt to be a racehorse,” Ryan said.

“After he won two weeks ago his demeanour around the stables changed and for the better so his future finally looks promising.”

Sentimental Dream ($4.20) settled third behind the leader Kryptonian ($31) and was always travelling well with Brendon McCoull aboard, while the well-backed Flying Geepee ($4) settled beyond midfield but made his move a long way from home.

McCoull was waiting for the chance to ease his mount off the fence and when the gap appeared the gelding forged his way clear to score comfortably from Flying Geepee, with Jupiter’s Moon ($21) a closing third ahead of Go for It.

Osborne gave Ryan and McCoull a stable double when the barrier rogue ground out a solid win in a benchmark 58 handicap over 1200m.

Osborne ($4) has been scratched at the barrier because of his aversion to the starting stalls more times than his trainer cares to mention and last night it almost happened again.

The gelding reared in barrier two and had to be taken out and inspected before being given the all-clear to start.

He began well and settled just off the speed and when McCoull eased him wide in the home straight, he charged home to defeat Owens and Boart. TASMANIAN Hall of Fame trainer Barry Campbell labelled his three-year-old Carmina a filly with a future after she scored an impressive maiden win over 1200m.

Carmina (Craig Newitt) showed early speed to retain the rail and lead and when the rider called on her for the big effort in the home straight she sped clear.

“We’ve taken our time with this filly and while there isn’t a lot of her she is very athletic and does what she has to do to get the job done,” Campbell said.

Campbell’s other smart filly Breathtaking was beaten as a long odds-on favourite in a class one handicap by the much-improved Owens.
