Butter than ever
MORE than a decade after they disappeared, Brisbane rap/rock act Butterfingers are back — and they’re coming to Tasmania tonight.
Butterfingers — Evil Eddie Jacobson (vocals, guitar), Olly Thomas (vocals, percussion), Dave Crane (bass) and Damien Green (drums) — burst onto the scene in 2003, releasing a string of hit singles including Everytime, I Love Work, Yo Mama, Figjam and Jesus I Was Evil over the next two years. Second album The Deeper You Dig ... (2006) spawned the top-40 single Get Up Outta the
Dirt, which won Butterfingers an APRA Award for Most Performed Urban Work in June 2007.
But then the band promptly disappeared, embarking on a 10year hiatus from the recording studio — during which time Evil Eddie performed with Brisbane punk band SpitFireLiar, and released a solo single called Queensland. Butterfingers finally returned early last year with the single Big Night Out; and have recently released their latest single Bullet To The Head — a rap/rock amalgamation described as a “blistering hot reaction to the stress of modern life due to the overstimulation and hyperconnectivity of social media, email and mobile devices in general”.
Butterfingers have set off on a national tour to promote the single, with drummer Tony McCall — who has performed with the likes of Wolfmother, Resin Dogs and Jamiroquai — filling in for Green, who is still recovering from a broken elbow sustained in a skateboarding accident late last year.
“There are spots on this tour that we haven’t played for 7-10 years,” Evil Eddie says.
“Considering how pumping our recent shows have been, and the kind of response we are getting from the new single, we’re just chomping at the bit to get out there and tear it up!”
Joined by Sydney MC Rapaport, Butterfingers bring their Bullet To the Head tour to Tasmania for two shows: at Club 54 in Launceston tonight; and the Republic Bar in North Hobart from 10pm tomorrow. Tickets to the Hobart show are $28.43 presale from the venue and
