Fun workshop draws a crowd

-

ONLY a handful of spots are still available in next weekend’s Hobart workshop led by leading Australian comedic actor Darren Gilshenan.

Gilshenan is one of the country’s most successful comedy performers, with Helpmann and Green Room awards to his name, plus a Logie nomination.

After graduating from NIDA in 1988 he spent a decade with The Bell Shakespeare Company, before turning to TV and appearing in shows like Full Frontal, Dossa and Joe, Chandon Pictures and Derrick, which he wrote and starred in. He went on to star as Uncle Terry in The Moodys and A Moody Christmas, and appear in The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting, No Activity, Here Come the Habibs! and Rake, as well as more serious dramas such as Janet King, Top of the Lake, The Killing Field and Harrow.

Having just returned from working on the US remake of No Activity, Gilshenan is heading to Hobart for an intensive two-day workshop designed to demystify the art of comedy acting and give participants the practical tools they need to generate laughter.

The workshop will explore the hidden tools that make comedy work, delving into the mechanics of contrast, extension, exaggeration, obsession, oblivion, strategy, rhythm and timing. The class will then apply those principles to scripts.

Presented by Acting True, Darren Gilshenan’s workshop is at Rosny College from 10am5pm next Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8. The cost is $250 ($220 concession) to participate, or $85 to watch. To book, email contact gormley@yahoo.com
