Short but stunning flicks
T HE annual Flickerfest International Short Film Festival national tour will make its way to southern Tasmania next week, with the very best bits of the 27th festival’s International Shorts and Australian Shorts programs to screen in Hobart and Cygnet next week.
The Best of International Shorts program features films from around the globe, including: ACADEMY Award-nominated German drama Watu Wote (“All Of Us”), based on the true story of Christians and Muslims in Kenya joining forces against extremist group the Al-Shabaab. TWISTED Swedish comedy Doda Farmor (‘Killing Grandma’), in which two girls learn that grandma is actually a world-weary, strong-willed woman. NEW Zealand drama The World in Your Window, about an eight-year-old boy living in a caravan with his grief-stricken father. HILARIOUS Canadian animation An Imagined Conversation With Kanye West And Stephen Hawking, which sees the rapper and the physicist discuss dancing, Drake and divination over a Chinese food picnic at the beach.
Highlights from the Best of Australian Shorts program include: THE dramatic and inspiring Miro, an Aboriginal Western short set after World War II and starring Mark Coles Smith ( Last Cab To Darwin). THE delightfully quirky and creative animated short Martha The Monster, which features the voices of Australian actor Rose Byrne and her husband Bobby Cannavale. THE dark comedy Second Best, by AACTA Award-winning director, writer, producer and actor Alyssa McClelland. A SHORT comedy titled Your Call Is Important
To Us, starring Andy Lee (Hamish & Andy) which confirms all your fears about what really goes on at a call centre while you’re on hold.
The Flickerfest national tour has three screenings in Tasmania, with two at the Salamanca Arts Centre’s Peacock Theatre: from 6.30pm next Thursday, April 5 (Best of International Shorts); and from 8pm on Friday, April 6 (Best of Australian Shorts).
