Two rockers take the cake
DIY Melbourne garage rockers Cakefight put the icing on their album launch tour this weekend, bringing their short, loud and fuzzy tunes to Tasmania for the first time.
Inspired by ’70s punk and oldschool rock ’n’ roll, Andrew Porter (guitar) and Vanessa Morris (drums) formed Cakefight in May 2016 and soon earned a reputation for their raucous, high-energy live performances.
The duo released their selftitled debut EP – featuring the single Sucks Under This Sun – early last year, having recorded it at Fuzz City studios in Austin, Texas. In late January this year they returned with their first fulllength album, which also happens to be self-titled.
Cramming 12 noisy tracks into a total running time of just 26 minutes, the album is a fullfrontal assault of garage punk that was mastered by in-demand producer and engineer Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring).
After performing tracks from the new album across New Zealand and up and down Australia’s east coast over the past two months, Cakefight are heading across Bass Strait for the first time. Joined by Hobart punk band Slaughterhaus Surf Cult, they play two Tasmanian shows this weekend: at Hobart’s Brisbane Hotel from 8pm tomorrow (with Yoni & The Steamers, $5 cover); and at Launceston’s Royal Oak on Saturday (with Squashed Lizard).
