C-Cell set for deliveries
Hazardous waste dump awaits signoff for first customers
CONSTRUCTION of the Copping C-Cell waste facility is finished and its first customers are expected to deliver their first loads within weeks.
The landfill site, Tasmania’s first hazardous waste dump, will handle controlled waste which needs extra levels of secure storage beyond what is required at a normal tip.
Southern Waste Solutions chief executive Christine Bell said she was waiting for fire and other management plans to be signed off on before the facility’s customers could start bringing out waste.
While Ms Bell would not name the site’s first customers she said deliveries from the Australian Antarctic Division were “programmed” and other Tasmanian customers were ready to bring waste to the site.
“We have had a reasonable amount of interest. We just need to sign off on the management plans and we are ready to go,” Ms Bell said.
“We are getting a bit toey to be honest, we want to start operating. At this stage we should be taking deliveries in the next few weeks. Most of the waste will be metal contaminated soil and timber.”
Ms Bell said controversy over the pending operation of the facility had abated since confusion over what would and would not be stored at the facility had cleared.
The project has been funded through a $4 million investment from the Clarence City Council and $2 million from the State Government.
Tasmania’s Environment Protection Authority gave its approval for the waste plant to go ahead last year.
Southern Waste Solutions is owned by Clarence, Sorell, Tasman and Kingborough councils.
