SECONDARY SCHOOL ENROLMENTS
STUDENTS studying agricultural enterprise at Claremont College are learning about the broad range of career options the agricultural and farming industry has in store for them.
Students are currently working in conjunction with local agricultural suppliers and experts to design the new agricultural area in the college grounds, which will initially house 49 chickens.
The students have taken into account the needs of free-range chickens, including the space and feeding requirements as well as safety within the enclosure.
To help with the research, students have visited Roberts Ltd at Bridgewater and discussed their needs with fencing experts from Waratah Fencing, allowing them to create a plan, ready for the Claremont College VET construction class to start building.
The local agricultural industry has been very supportive of this program, which aims to allow students to broaden their skills and knowledge, and make informed decisions on possible agricultural careers, after the completion of Year 12.
Within the agricultural enterprise subject, Claremont College students experience many aspects of the industry, including wool classing, animal and plant systems and farm engineering. They will travel to Agfest in Term 2, to look at innovations in the agricultural industry.
The broad range of topics studied within the course allows students to understand that agriculture is a much broader business than farming, with many employment options available.
Students will run a plant and animal enterprise as part of the course, allowing them to learn important business skills, including communication, management, enterprise and workplace health and safety. This will broaden the options available to those who wish to work in the agricultural industry after Year 12.
The agricultural enterprise class is yet another subject available to Claremont College students in response to local needs. Other new subjects proving successful include VET courses in tourism and electrotechnology. AN ADVERTISING FEATURE
