Engineering vital skills for the future
SECONDARY SCHOOL ENROLMENTS
IN the spirit of the school’s original founders in 1847, the Sisters of Charity, Mount Carmel College reaches out to the community by offering a number of scholarships for new and existing students entering Year 7 in 2019.
The founders’ commitment was to improve educational opportunities, especially for young women, equipping them with skills to make a positive contribution to society. We remain true to this focus today at the College and strive to provide an education which fosters creative thinkers, confident problem solvers and independent learners.
Two of the scholarships provide a 50 per cent reduction on academic fees right through to Year 10. They include a science and engineering scholarship, open to any girl with a passion and enthusiasm for maths, science and problem solving.
“Mount Carmel College has developed a reputation for excellence in Science by representing Tasmania three times at the National Science & Engineering Challenge,” Mrs Nolan said.
“There is a gender imbalance in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and many companies are looking to recruit more female scientists and engineers,” Head of Science and Mathematics Aimee Woodward said.
“This scholarship is offered in anticipation that the student will further develop her science and engineering skills and go on to help fill this global skills gap.”
There is also a Sisters of Charity Scholarship, designed to encourage students to follow in the footsteps of Mount Carmel College’s founders through service to the disadvantaged and a commitment to social justice and the environment.
“It is expected that for each year of the scholarship, the recipient will participate in at least one project that fulfils the mission of the Catholic Church and the Sisters of Charity,” Mrs Nolan said.
“These scholarships have been designed to provide new opportunities for girls and to foster passions and encourage excellence across different areas of educational and spiritual growth.”
There are also three music tuition scholarships available which provide individual weekly half-hour music lessons for the duration of Year 7.
Mount Carmel Head of The Arts Dave McNamara encourages applications from any student with a passion for music, including those who may not have had tuition previously.
“We particularly encourage girls who are currently studying or who would like to study a wind or brass instrument, or would like to have vocal tuition,” he said. Applications for these scholarships are now invited, with full details available on the Mount Carmel website: mountcarmel.tas.edu.au. Both current and prospective students are encouraged to apply, with all applications to be received no later than Friday, June 29.
