What a suite way to spend a lunchtime

- — PENNY THOW

THE Conservatorium Orchestra will feature the Bach Orchestra Suite No.3, BMV 1068 and the Mozart Symphony No.39 K 543 at their lunchtime concert in Hobart tomorrow.

The Bach suite will feature lead violin Susan Collins and will be conducted by Riley O’Doherty, who studied saxophone and conducting in Newcastle before coming to Hobart last year to study conducting with Johannes Fritzsch at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.

O’Doherty said Bach only composed the violin and continuo parts of the suite, while Bach’s son Carl “gave it a grander orchestration”.

“It is five movements mostly composed of dance forms common at the time,” O’Doherty said.

“It begins with an overture, which starts in a slow, regal way, and is followed by a faster, exciting fugue.

“The second movement is known as The Air on a G String and has become very popular.

“There are also a couple of gavottes, a bourree, and it finishes with a lively gigue.”

Collins will conduct the Mozart piece, which she said was the first of the composer’s three last symphonies.

“He composed them during the summer of 1788,” she said.

“The No.39 is in D major and is an incredibly glorious and uplifting work.

“It has a long introduction similar to an operatic overture. The second is slow and lyrical, the third is a minuet and trio, and the fourth is very well known.

“It is very tricky and is often used for auditions, so it is good for students to learn.”

The concert will be held in the Conservatorium Recital Hall on Sandy Bay Rd from 1pm tomorrow. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 concession, available from www.utas.edu .au/music
