Thomas proves a fine prospect at national titles

PROSPECT Vale Golf Club’s Ryan Thomas was the bestperfor­med Tasmanian at this year’s Australian Boys’ Amateur Championsh­ip in WA.

Thomas, 16, finished equal 29th at Gosnells Golf Club last week, with rounds of 74, 76, 73 and 71 to finish 14-over.

Prospect Vale’s Jack Blair and Tasmania Golf Club’s Timothy Smith made the cut, Blair finishing equal 53rd with scores of 74, 74, 77 and 75 and Smith carding 75, 76, 77 and 74 to finish outright 58th.

WA’s Connor Fewkes won the Australian Boys’ Amateur by two strokes at five-underpar. The Kalgoorlie left-hander claimed the title ahead of another Sandgroper in Jordan Jung (-3) and Queensland­er Louis Dobbelaar (-2).

Western Australia’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard won the girls’ championsh­ip with rounds of 70, 67, 67 and 74 to finish at 14-under. Tasmania Golf Club’s Mackenzie Wilson was the best Tasmanian at her first Australian Girls’ Amateur Championsh­ip at the Royal Perth Golf Club. She tied for 48th with rounds of 84, 77, 82 and 86. The Australian Boys’ and Girls’ Interstate Teams Matches continue this week at the Hartfield and Royal Perth Golf Clubs. LAST Sunday saw the conclusion of divisions one to four in the 2018 Southern Pennant regular season.

Kingston Beach hosted Royal Hobart and Tasmania in the final round of the division one triangular series. Kingston Beach destroyed Royal Hobart’s dreams of finishing on top of the division and earning a home final with a 5-2 victory in the morning.

Best for Kingston Beach were Matthew Glover playing No. 1 and defeating Joey Bower 7&6 and No. 3 Shaun Smith beating Matthew Blackburn 4&3.

Tasmania Golf Club turned the tables on the host club in the afternoon, defeating Kingston Beach 5½-1½.

Richard Kube and Paul Read were the best for Tas- mania defeating Craig Garland 2&1 and Sam Halliday 3&2 respective­ly.

Tasmania will now contest the division one southern pennant playoff at home against Royal Hobart on April 22 starting at 8am.

Divisions two and three will see Tasmania host Claremont in the battle for the southern flag and a chance to contest the state final next month.

Tasmania and Pittwater are expected to fight out a close division four southern final.

Congratula­tions to Oatlands, Claremont, Iron Pot, Richmond, Tasmania and New Norfolk for capturing flags in divisions five to 12. THE fifth round of Women’s Golf Tasmania-South division one pennant was conducted last weekend with Tasmania hosting Claremont.

The Tasmania ladies made good use of their home course advantage defeating Claremont 4½-½. With this win, Tasmania Golf Club moves back into first place on the overall leaderboar­d with four points, half a match in front of Royal Hobart.
