Kingston run down by Cripps

- RENEE GODFREY

CRIPPS Waratah and Kingston Blues drew 37-all in their Round 5 Premier League match on Wednesday night.

Kingston shot out to an impressive lead in the first quarter and, with Jo Stevenson looking confident in goals and Olivia McGow working tirelessly at wing attack, it was able to hold a 13-5 lead after the first quarter.

Erin Lucas moved into the centre at the first break adding further drive into Kingston’s attacking end.

Sarah Pidgeon entered the match for Cripps and her experience helped calm the attack by providing a strong option under the post and they were able to close the gap slightly, with Kingston up 21-15 at halftime. Cripps defenders Kate Patmore and Hannah Fazackerley continued to impress in defence and their strong contesting helped Cripps to outscore Kingston in the third quarter by four.

Bec Strong moved back into goals in the last quarter with her composure allowing Kingston to remain in front for the majority of the term and looking like it might hold on for the win. But a determined Cripps, inspired by Maddy Paine who continued to contest at every opportunity, converted their opportunities to come away with the draw.

Player of the match was awarded to Kingston’s Jen Hanlon.

In the other match of the round, AYC accounted for Huon 40-27 with AYC’s Xanthe Pastoor named player of the match.
