Club has visitors green with envy

- JIM ALOUAT

BRIGHTON Bowls and Community Club was once an eyesore but is now the envy of bowlers everywhere thanks to an $835,000 redevelopment.

Club members Judy and Doug Hollaway said the redevelopment, which has seen the construction of a multipurpose function room, a commercial kitchen and two administrative offices, would benefit the club and the Brighton community.

“It’s going to be great for the community,” Mrs Hollaway said.

Mr Hollaway said Brighton had been lacking a place to hold weddings, engagement parties and community events.

“The new facility will hold up to 200 people. We had people at the opening yesterday from other bowls clubs who were envious of what we have,” he said.

Brighton Mayor Tony Foster said it would allow the club to expand and increase membership, open for longer hours and increase opportunities for community use by providing a familyfriendly function centre.

Federal Regional Development Minister John McVeigh said regional towns like Brighton often suffered from a lack of suitable public meeting spaces.

“This conversion has provided a fully serviced community centre capable of hosting the kinds of projects and events which bring people together and create a real sense of identity,” he said.
