Captain out of City’s A-League showdown
MELBOURNE City will be without captain Michael Jakobsen for tonight’s A-League semi-final against Newcastle after he succumbed to a quad injury.
The Danish centre back couldn’t train yesterday, saving manager Warren Joyce a tough selection decision.
As it stands, Osama Malik, a Joyce favourite who plied his trade in midfield all season until a recent injury of his own, continues in defence, allowing City to field an unchanged line-up against the Jets. While it’s saved Joyce a selection dilemma, it’s not good news for the club or player.
“It’s disappointing for us and frustrating for the lad,” Joyce said. “He’s had such a good season.”
Joyce said there were other players carrying “bangs and bruises” but history was on the line. In eight seasons, City hasn’t reached a grand final. This is its third semi-final.
