Given that Australia Day has connotatio­ns of British invasion or settlement and Anzac Day seems to have specific connotatio­ns related to the British exploitati­on of Australia and New Zealand during war and particular­ly Gallipoli. Why not amalgamate the two remembranc­e-type days into the one day?

Call it Peace and Reconcilia­tion Day and hold it on April 25 each year? It could, from here on, be about appreciati­on of the military service and sacrifice given by all races of people in all wars, and be about the more important future hope, focus and search for a meaningful peace while acknowledg­ing the importance of Aboriginal heritage over years and also during war. MY family went to the dawn ceremony and we were all disappoint­ed at the constant references to God. Given the multicultu­ral population in our country, it’s about time we made the ceremony less orientated towards Christian beliefs.

We would support a neutral based community service. ALAS, I fear a Hobart icon may be lost. Has anyone thought through what would happen if a cable car gets built on Mt Wellington? How on earth could the Mercury fill its pages?
