League shock as coach departs

- ADAM CLIFFORD

THE women’s Premier Hockey League has been shocked by news that DiamondBacks coach Sarah Birch has stepped aside, just three matches into the season.

DiamondBacks president Stu Beltz revealed that he had accepted Birch’s resignation for personal reasons.

“We thank Sarah for her commitment and dedication to our senior group and her inclusion of our junior development program,” Beltz said.

“The club is currently looking at appointing a new coach to continue with the direction and development of the player group.”

The Maroons face an important match against Canterbury at 4.30pm, with the Lions bolstered by the return of former Van Demons star Hannah Richardson after the birth of her baby Olivia in January.

Lions coach Dan Mills says he will elevate her straight into the leadership group.

“She will bring a quality and intensity to the group, as well as being another experienced player who can help develop the juniors,” Mills said.

North-West Graduates and Derwent open the round at 1.30, with Annie Scutt a big inclusion for the ladder leaders.

University and OHA meet at 3pm. University coach Vanessa McDonald has an impressive record against OHA but warns it is a very different proposition now.

“They posses great strength, pace and drive through their midfield and upfront,” she said.

“We will learn a tough lesson if we try and play through these lines.

“The ladder is tight, which is great for the competition that everything is close, and every game is important.”
