League pushing road safety message
THE TSL might be crying out for help from AFL House, but that doesn’t mean the league isn’t willing to also chip in and help others.
Players today will wear yellow armbands to raise awareness of National Road Safety Week. Last year 1227 people were killed and 35,000 seriously injured on Australian roads.
North Hobart’s acting captain Nathan McCulloch said the Demons jumped at the chance to don the armband for today’s game with North Launceston.
“Obviously it has been well publicised, we need some help from the big boys,” McCulloch said.
“The more we can do in the community to raise awareness for important issues like road safety I’m more than happy to be a part of.”
It is a daunting task today facing the young winless Demons against the reigning premier that has been boosted by the return of last year’s playing coach Tom Couch for a fly-in game.
On top of this the Demons are without their inspirational skipper and most experienced player Hugh Williams, who was knocked out cold in a sickening, accidental clash with an uncovered gutter in last week’s loss to Glenorchy.
McCulloch said the whole club was shaken by the injury, but spirits had been buoyed by Williams’s appearance at training.
“He’s been at training each night, it has been really good to have him around and the boys have been able to chat to him and he’s in as good as spirits as he can be,” McCulloch said.
“Everyone loves ‘Ears’ as we affectionately know him.
“It has been great to have him around and he spoke to the boys on Tuesday night, which I’m sure was really encouraging for the group.”
