Arrows need a lift after two losses

- RENEE GODFREY

AYC-FRIENDS Arrows aim to return to the winner’s circle when they take on Kingston Blues in tonight’s State League netball match at Hobart Netball and Sports Centre.

The Arrows have suffered two losses in as many weeks, including a shock 25-goal defeat by Northern Hawks, and will need to be at their best to match Kingston.

Sophie Gunn continues to remain a focal point for the Arrows, having scored 320 of their 380 goals this year, while captain and defender Zoe Gough remains steady in defence and is a formidable opponent for any goalie.

Arrows player Jamie Philps said while her side was disappointed with the losses, they had been training hard this week and would be looking to improve their consistency.

“We’re going to come out and fight back hard,” Philps said. “We have moments of brilliance, so we just need to make sure our consistency’s there all across the court.”

Kingston hasn’t recorded a win against the Arrows for many seasons, but with such a skilful and versatile team this year they have every chance of turning the tables tonight.

Lucy Bosker has been instrumental in Kingston’s three wins this year as the unassuming midcourter works tirelessly to control the centre court and combines beautifully with her goalies and defenders.

The inclusion of Greta Shelton in the midcourt has injected speed and athleticism through the centre and with tall target Gemma Polley making the move from under 19s to opens this year, she has proved her worth by shooting at 87 per cent so far this season.

Kingston captain Laura Elliott said her side would be looking to provide full court pressure.

“It will be a big task for us but we’re just going to run with a bit of momentum coming off a big win last week and their coming off two losses so we’ll be looking to take advantage of that,” she said.
