Griffith happy to stay in Tasmania (for now)

NEW Australian coach Justin Langer might be looking for a new support crew, but it won’t include Tigers coach Adam Griffith — yet.

Griffith spent six seasons as Langer’s assistant at Western Australia before taking over as the Tigers’ head coach before last season.

With Langer’s ascent to the national top job, there was some concern at Cricket Tasmania the Tigers could lose the man who took them from last place to the Sheffield Shield final in just one year to the Australian set-up.

“I caught up with ‘JL’ for a coffee over the holidays a month ago, this was before all this has happened, and there was no discussion about it,” said Griffith, 40. “I’m really happy here in Tasmania.

“I’ve been here for a year and we’ve only just started the process of getting to where we want to get to and there is a long road ahead for us and I’m really excited.”

But he said just like his players he has aspirations to make it to the national team eventually.

“We want people who have ambition, we want people who want to go to the next level and it would be remiss of me if I was just happy plodding along where I am,” he said.

“I want to be the best coach I can possibly be and get as high as I can be and the ultimate is to coach Australia one day. That’s always the goal for a lot of coaches.

“How that happens I’m not sure, whether I get there I’m not sure, but I need to do a really good job here in Tasmania first.

“I’m still a young coach and I’ve got a lot to learn myself and if I can continue to do that we’ll see what happens.”
