This time try beautiful not ugly
APPARENTLY there really is going to be a new Bridgewater bridge. In the 1970s, revered architect Robin Boyd wrote at length about “the Australian ugliness”. If he was here today, I’m sure he would have something incisive to say about the future design of the said new bridge.
The existing bridge is nothing short of an eyesore, hardly a welcome experience to those approaching and crossing it. Let’s hope there will be visionary, sensible, considered and aesthetic design in the mix for the planning of a new and beautiful bridge because it’s going to be there for decades.
Get it right
WHEN we had district football, most schools had a team. They played Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings. The underage played, then the seconds and seniors. Families came for the day to see their boys play. Attendances per head of population were unequalled, as was the development from schools through junior ranks to senior competitions throughout the state.
Local clubs that now struggle to exist should be praised for giving our youth a chance to participate in our great game.
When we had district footy, we had no help from the AFL, and nothing has changed. We have gone backwards. For the sake of our great game, I hope those given responsibility to get it right actually get it right. Street bankers had to be bailed out by the US Government as “too big to crash”. What was the first thing the bankers did? Set aside $6.8 billion to pay their bonuses when they were responsible for policies, like subprime mortgages, that caused the crash. and marina but also on land in Kangaroo Bay listed as at high risk of inundation.
Chambroad Petrochemicals won’t have to worry as the deal signed by the Hodgman Government with the Co-ordinator General and council leaves ratepayers liable for costs and risks associated.
