Stags wallow in the mire against plucky Vikings

- TERRY RICHARDSON

MANY games were washed out in the Tasmanian Rugby Union competition, but it didn’t stop the Glenorchy Stags fighting out a cracker against AMC Vikings.

All eyes were on how AMC would bounce back after its defeat by the Lions. But it was the Stags who saw the opportunity and began playing with passion up the middle early.

Aron Lovell was bursting over the advantage line and it was clear that Glenorchy had the ascendancy early.

Unfortunately for the Stags, they could not convert the ter- ritory and possession advantage to scoreboard pressure.

There was no doubt that the slippery conditions did contribute to a lack of finishing.

From AMC’s point of view, it relied on an ability to work itself into the game and make the most of counter-attack.

The final score was 12-all.

After the game neither side seemed disappointed, given the conditions made quality ball movement difficult. They finished two tries apiece.

The Hutchins Hobart Lions continued their good form with a solid 44-12 win against Taroona B.

The Lions were clinical in their approach and seemed to control most of the game.

Sammy Lopa backed up his solid game last week with another consistent performance while Hamish Fyfe had a breakout game at fullback.

In the engine room, Jonathan Cook contributed well to a solid all-round performance.
