Mohr may take on Brown in key all-Tassie match-up

- ADAM SMITH

AFTER nearly a year on the AFL sidelines, Tasmanian Tim Mohr could be thrust into a battle with the most dangerous forward in the game on his return to the GWS side today.

The key defender, who has not featured in the Giants’ senior side since being a late call-up against West Coast in Round 10 last year, will replace injured co-captain Phil Davis against North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena this afternoon.

Davis suffered concussion following a clash in the third quarter against the Eagles last weekend, opening the door for Mohr, an inaugural Giant, to play his 47th AFL match.

And it could lead to an all-Tasmanian match-up against Coleman Medal leader Ben Brown, who starred in North’s last match in Hobart against Carlton last month with five goals, including four in a first-half masterclass.

Mohr comes into the contest having been named in the best three players for the Giants’ NEAFL side in the past three weeks, with assistant coach Mark McVeigh in no doubt the 196cm, 103kg backman can slot into the back six.

“Phil Davis unfortunately is out but we have had to deal with a fair bit of injury this year and we think it has given a lot of opportunities for younger players to step up,” McVeigh said.

“We are able to put Tim Mohr in, which is great. Obviously coming home is one thing, but Tim has been in great form at NEAFL level and been one of the most consistent players and obviously you have to respect the chance he gets.

“He is in the side to really contribute. We will back him all the way — we are pretty excited for him, he deserves it.

“He is one of them [a possible match-up for Brown], absolutely. We have Aidan Corr who played on [Josh] Kennedy last week who we think is in really good defensive form and obviously Tim can play on the big key forwards as well.

“Definitely he is one of those players we can consider to play on a very good forward.”
