Something definitely brewing for TSO
A12- PIECE string chamber orchestra of Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra members will perform works by Mendelssohn and Australian composers Elena Kats-Chernin, Peter Sculthorpe and Carl Vine at the next TSO Live Sessions gig in Hobart tomorrow night.
The program will begin with the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings, which concert co-organiser Robert Gibson said was the composer’s first unqualified success.
“Technically it is a chamber piece because each of the four violins, two violas and two cellos play their own individual parts,” he said.
“It has a big sound and is definitely heading in the direction of orchestral music. It’s vigorous, lively, energetic, a really good play for the musicians, and a great start to the evening.”
Gibson said Elena KatsChernin’s Blue Rose was a quirky, fun piece.
“It’s lively and joyous and really swings,” he said.
“The ensemble will also play Night Song by Peter Sculthorpe, which is more reflective and down-tempo. It has a wistfulness to it and a haunting melody that almost transforms into a sunny tune.”
The program will conclude with Pipe Dreams by Carl Vine, featuring flautist Katie Zagorski.
“It’s basically a concerto for flute and strings and is really challenging,” Gibson said.
“There are lots of exotic and adventurous sounds, and it’s a tour de force for everyone involved, particularly Katie.
“It will be a great finale for the concert, which will be 70 years to the day since the TSO gave its first performance.”
The TSO Live Sessions show will be held at the Hobart Brewing Company (Macquarie Point) from 7pm tomorrow. Tickets are $35, available from
