RUN theatre company PLoT explores the darker side of young love in Eurydice, which opens at Salamanca tonight. Part play and part long-form poem, Eurydice is an evocative reinterpretation of an Ancient Greek myth for a modern audience.

Dealing with themes surrounding love, loss and family, the story is based around the legend of ill-fated lovers Eurydice, an oak nymph, and Orpheus, a brilliant musician who could charm the animals and even trees with his lyre tunes.

But Eurydice dies on her wedding day, only to reunite with her late father in a dreamlike underworld where stones can talk and rooms are built out of string.

When a devastated Orpheus travels to the underworld to meet her, Eurydice is forced to decide between them.

PLoT were drawn to the poetic language and strong physical imagery of Eurydice, which “aims to honour the original myth while tackling contentious modern themes surrounding death, loss and loyalty” in a “semi-abstract, comedic and visually focused way”.

Written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Bella Young, Eurydice stars Emma Skalicky as Eurydice, Lochie Dew as Orpheus and Matt Rossner as Father, plus Paul McNally, Sophia Matelli, Rosemary Cann and Victoria Bremner.

PLoT presents Eurydice at the Peacock Theatre (Salamanca Arts Centre) from tonight until Sunday, with shows at 7.30pm tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, and 2.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $25, $20 concession, phone 6234 5998 or go to
