AKE a fantastical journey into the mind of author Lewis Carroll next week, when Hamley Productions digs deep into Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.

Carroll first told stories about the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen, the Cheshire Cat and other quirky characters to a girl named Alice and her sisters in 1862 as they rowed a boat down an English river.

The children enjoyed the stories so much that Alice pleaded with Carroll to write them down for her. It became one of the most enchanting and enduring children’s stories ever written, Alice in Wonderland.

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground takes audiences right into Carroll’s living room, where ravens fly and desks come to life as Carroll introduces Alice to a series of characters that embody the illogical and nonsensical adult world, while shining a light on the whimsical and often melancholy author’s complex life.

Suitable for ages 13-plus, the show stars Hamley Productions creative director Chris Hamley in the lead role of Lewis Carroll and Madeleine Jeffrey-Moore as the young Alice, with Kate Choraziak, Aleksandra Crossan and Ivano Del Pio combining to bring more than 20 other characters to life on stage.

“This show is a wonderful playground for our outstanding actors, who really have to rely on their imagination, voice and physicality to bring to life each of Carroll’s characters,” director Andrew Casey says.

After a successful Launceston season at the Earl Arts Centre last month, Hamley Productions presents Alice’s Adventures Under Ground in the Theatre Royal Backspace in Hobart from June 1-9, with shows at 8pm Wednesday-Saturday, plus 2pm matinees on June 3 and June 9. Tickets are $40, $35 concession. For bookings phone 6233 2299 or go to www.theatreroyal.com.au
