Tough task to topple Hawks

- RENEE GODFREY OHA v Devon: Cripps v Hawks:

THIS weekend’s State League netball features some great contests as teams look to cement spots in the top four.

Cripps Waratah has the unenviable task of taking on the unbeaten ladder leaders Northern Hawks at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre tomorrow.

The Hawks have scored at least 160 more goals than any other team this year. Their lethal attack end, driven by tall powerhouse Ashlea Mawer, has been unstoppable.

Mawer’s strong position is complemented by beautiful feeding from Zoe Claridge and Ashton Whiley, and if Cripps has any chance of getting a win against the Hawks its players will need to pile on the pressure through the centre court.

A bonus for Cripps is having Alex Vinen back at keeper.

The young defender continues to build each week after almost a year off last season with injury.

Cavaliers will be looking to return to the winners’ circle when they take on Karana at the Silverdome in Launceston.

Cavaliers had their first win against AYC-Friends Arrows earlier this year but have lost two of their past three matches against Cripps and the Hawks.

Karana was also unsuccessful last week, going down to Kingston, and will need the win to help keep its finals aspirations on track.

OHA will be searching for its first win of the season as it tackles Devon at home and will be hoping for a big crowd to fire up its players for a precious victory.

Devon will be confident heading into the match after it recorded its first win last weekend over North-West rival Burnie.

Darcy Elliston, from OHA, is looking forward to the match and believes her team has what it takes to get the win as the new side continues to build and improve every week.

“The girls are very keen and I think that’s been a big thing this season. The girls are excited every week we come to play,” Elliston said.

“We’re there to improve and we’re there to show the team and the competition that we are improving and that we can hold it up against the best.

“So I think that for us it has been tough, but morale is definitely there within the group.”
