It’s going to get cold — no bull

- ALEX LUTTRELL

HOLY cow, it’s getting chilly.

Winter will officially kick off in fine and freezing form this week with wind, rain and snow set to sweep the state.

Two cold fronts will hit Tasmania as part of a low-pressure system making its way southeast during the week, resulting in snow, frost and showers across the state.

Tasmania’s capital is expecting a showery top of 13C today, even with a dusting of snow down to 800m on top of kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

A frost warning is also in place for the North, Midlands and East Coast areas this morning.

Temperatures could drop down to -1C in those areas.

Snow will again fall to 800m on kunanyi/Mt Wellington tomorrow, with a top of 13C expected again.

Friday will reach an equally chilly 14C.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matthew Thomas said the low temperatures would be the “new norm”, with Hobart’s June average at 12C.

“The temperatures we’re getting after these fronts come through later in the week are close to our June average,” Mr Thomas said.

“It’s just what you would expect about this time of year.”

Hobart temperatures will rise slightly towards the weekend as the cold front travels east, with Saturday and Sunday up to 15C.
