Dangerfield more of a concern, says May

- ANDREW HAMILTON

GOLD Coast skipper Steven May has delivered a verbal shirt-front to former teammate Gary Ablett, saying Patrick Dangerfield held more fears for the Suns in their return to Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

However, May said he would love the chance to follow his words with actions after enduring years of Ablett taunting him about his desire for a man-on-man match-up in the goal square.

The re-emergence of key defender Rory Thompson this year has allowed the Suns to use May in a variety of roles and he has enjoyed success playing on smaller midfielders when they rotate through the forward line.

He was one of the Suns’ best in that role against star Power goalsneak Robbie Gray in China.

With the Cats likely to play just the one tall forward following the sickening broken ankle suffered by emerging force Esava Ratugolea, May could find himself picking up the most dangerous Geelong midfielder.

And he had no hesitation looking beyond his former captain and the Suns’ only Brownlow medallist to his midfield partner Dangerfield, who has also taken home a Charlie as the league’s best and fairest.

“I would love to play on Gaz for a bit, but Dangerfield is more dangerous at the moment,’’ he said.

“He won’t like that Gaz, hearing that.

“Whoever is deepest I would probably have to take them, but Gaz used to always joke at training that he would love to have me in the goalsquare one-on-one, so it could happen this week. “We’ll see, it should be fun.’’ Co-captain Tom Lynch has declared himself a certain starter after a month lay-off with a knee injury but says he is no closer to making a decision on his future. Lynch said he had pulled up well from a solid training session.
