Crippling blow for Cameron

- ANDREW HAMILTON

A DISMAL weekend for Queensland’s two AFL clubs has been compounded by major injuries to Steven May and Charlie Cameron.

Cameron, who could lay claim to being the recruit of the year after a stellar start to his stint at Brisbane, will have further tests tomorrow morning but the Lions fear he will miss six to eight weeks with a dreaded lisfranc foot injury.

The news was slightly better for the Suns on skipper Steven May, who has a lateral ankle sprain and is expected to miss four to six weeks. It is a better outcome than the initial fears after the game that he may not be back this season.

Cameron’s injury is a bitter blow for the Lions, who are desperate to claw their way off the bottom of the AFL ladder.

Football manager David Noble said Cameron had made a major contribution to the side in his first year at the club and conceded his absence would leave a gaping hole.

He said there would not be a final diagnosis provided until another scan this morning but the club expected it to be two months and potentially more if he took some time to regain full fitness.

“We will find out the full extent tomorrow but we think it is a sprain,” he said.

“It was the classic lisfranc motion where the force comes from behind. He had scans late today and we will get some Xrays in the morning but we are not hopeful.”
