MOST eight-year-olds will be spending this long weekend with friends and family trying to escape the cold but Cooper Ford will be using his time to progress his motocross career as he tears up the track in Port Macquarie.

Cooper will be travelling to Port Macquarie to compete at the NSW State Motocross final after becoming eligible for the event with a top five result in his class at a qualifying round in Nowra in March.

The Mount Stuart Primary School Grade 3 student was awarded two golden tickets, giving him the opportunity to compete in the final for the 50cc and 65cc.

The NSW State Motocross final, also known as the King of MX, will have riders competing from around Australia.

“I think I will go pretty well,” Cooper said. “I’m aiming to get top three.”

This event will be used as a learning experience for Cooper, who has his sights on the Australian Junior Motocross Championships to be held in Penguin later this year.

In the lead-up to the event Cooper has been training up to three times a week under the watchful eye of multiple Australian junior champion Brody Jennings.

“He has helped me get my technique right going into corners,” Cooper said.

“He is the best coach in Tassie, I’ve been with him for three years.

“He has taught me a lot.”
