Bound four glory

-

ACCLAIMED Sydney band FourPlay — possibly Australia’s only indie rock band string quartet — will perform at the official opening of Mona’s new exhibition this weekend.

Hailed as the future of classical music, FourPlay is an eclectic collection of classically trained musicians — brothers Peter (cello) and Tim (viola) Hollo, Lara Goodridge (violin) and Shenzo Gregorio (viola) — who have entertained audiences from Newcastle pubs to Asian concert halls since winning the University of New South Wales Band Competition back in 1995.

They have earned an international reputation for both their original songwriting and their radical classical reinventions of popular songs, having put their unique spin on tunes by everyone from Radiohead, The Strokes and Rage Against The Machine, to Sufjan Stevens and Leonard Cohen, to Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

Last month FourPlay returned with their new single, Bound, which began as a riff inspired by Jack White and Beyonce.

Bound features a melodic chorus, a crazed viola solo and Goodridge’s soaring vocals, as she sings about staring down life’s challenges while taking responsibility for our decisions.

The Bound single includes three previously unreleased remixes from the band’s 2006 album Now To The Future.

FourPlay and legendary US space-jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra will perform at Mona on Saturday night as part of the official opening of the museum’s new major exhibition, ZERO.

Tickets are booked out, but more will be available on the door on the night (subject to capacity).
