SHINING LIGHT

TASSIE’S JIMMY A STAR

- WITH ADAM SMITH

THIS WEEK’S BEST

IN what is fast becoming a train wreck of a season for St Kilda, Jimmy Webster continues to be a rare shining light.

The Saints were belted by the Swans on Saturday night by 71 points, with few players able to walk from the ground with their head held high.

Webster, however, was again the side’s best player and could well be leading the club best and fairest at this point following his breakout year.

The rebounding defender had 24 disposals — only Seb Ross (25) had more — four intercept marks and three tackles, as well as 436m gained.

Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij trumped Webster with five intercept marks as Geelong handed North Melbourne a reality check.

Kolodjashnij has become an important cog in the Cats’ back six and finished with 16 possessions and nine marks.

High-flying Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt played his role in the Tigers’ loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night, booting three goals from 11 disposals.

ALWAYS NEXT WEEK

RICHMOND big man Toby Nankervis had his colours lowered by Paddy Ryder at Adelaide Oval.

Nankervis was beaten in the hit-outs 41-27, with Ryder’s ability to give midfielders Ollie Wines and Chad Wingard first use of the ball crucial in Port’s victory.

Mav Weller was one of several Saints who struggled against the Swans, managing just nine disposals and a junk-time goal on Saturday night, while his brother Lachie — traded to the Gold Coast from Fremantle for pick No. 2 last year — gathered only 13 touches as the Suns were hammered by GWS. Coleman Medal leader Ben Brown failed to hit the scoreboard for only the sec- ond time this season — and first since Round 1— as North battled to provide decent supply down at Geelong.

IN THE MIX

JACKSON Thurlow was named second best for Gee- long’s VFL side in its 100point win against North Melbourne but, with the Cat backline appearing settled, he may need to bide his time. After booting six goals last week Ryan Gardner chimed in with one on Saturday.
