All’s Weller that ends Weller for Saint Mav

- WITH ADAM SMITH

THIS WEEK’S BEST

BURNIE brothers Mav and Lachie Weller were on opposite ends of the thriller on the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night after the Saints’ stunning comeback victory.

The pair crossed paths on several occasions with Lachie playing a rebounding role from half-back, while Mav was floating across half-forward in his customary role.

And while it was Mav’s side that stole the glory after storming back from five goals down at three-quarter time, the duo were both among their team’s better players.

Mav accumulated 15 possessions from seven marks and five tackles, with his only blemish kicking 0.2 — including a set shot late in the match that would have put St Kilda in front at the time before Jade Gresham’s snap sealed the result anyway.

Lachie collected 19 disposals, and his 556m gained was a team high for the Suns.

Jack Riewoldt was again in the thick of things for the Tigers, kicking two goals and having a solid first half as the reigning premiers held off Geelong at the MCG.

ALWAYS NEXT WEEK

AFTER a solid month of football leading Adelaide’s depleted midfield, the bye could not have come at a better time for Hugh Greenwood.

From Rounds seven to 11, the basketball convert averaged just under 20 touches and 10 tackles a match, but he has been quieter in the past fortnight as the Crows’ form dipped badly.

Greenwood had just 12 possessions in Saturday night’s loss to Hawthorn, and will relish a week off to freshen up, given his contested style of play.

St Kilda’s most consistent player Jimmy Webster could be set for a stint on the sidelines after hurting his groin early in the clash with the Suns. Webster has suffered groin problems in the past and the club will no doubt take a no-risk policy with its most improved defender.

As with many of his teammates, Carlton defender Liam Jones was also far from his best in the horror loss to Fremantle on Saturday, with opponent Brennan Cox getting the better of the duel early.

Jones did have five intercept marks but only gained the Blues 82m from his 10 disposals — which was a team low.

IN THE MIX

ROBBIE Fox picked up 30 disposals in Sydney’s 67point thumping of Gold Coast in the NEAFL but, with the Swans having the bye in Round 14, he will have to cool his heels for another week before possibly returning to senior action.
