Hundreds at vigil for Eurydice

HUNDREDS of women, men and children have gathered in Hobart to remember Melbourne comedian Eurydice Dixon at a candlelight vigil on Parliament Lawns.

The 22-year-old was allegedly raped and murdered while walking home from a stand-up comedy gig last Wednesday.

Her body was discovered on a soccer field in Carlton, just hundreds of metres from her home, sparking an outpouring of grief and anger about violence against women.

Reclaim the Park Hobart organisers Saffire Grant and Aimee Clarke said last night’s Hobart vigil was being held in solidarity with women across the country.

“My sister is organising the Perth event so I volunteered my services for Hobart,” Ms Grant said.

“Particularly for Hobart we felt it was important to hold the vigil on the same night at the same time because Dark Mofo is on and a lot of people in the performance art community are performing or visiting Hobart and unable to be in Melbourne,” she said.

Ms Clarke said domestic violence and violence against women was an issue that affected everyone.

“I wanted to renew the sense of community that we have in Hobart to help those who were feeling empty, angry and sad like I was,” she said.

“Raising awareness for Eurydice and the other 30plus-women who have died as a result of violence against women this year, and the tone deaf and irresponsible comments by the Victoria Police in this most recent tragedy is another motivation.”

Thousands of people attended other vigils in parks across Australia.

Broadmeadows man Jaymes Todd, 19, has been charged with the rape and murder of Ms Dixon.
