Vast beauty at risk

- Damien Codognotto Howrah Stewart Edwards Mt Stuart

THERE is no doubt the David Attenborough documentary sparked a sense of pride in every Tasmanian who watched it. The stunning footage highlighted the vast and unique beauty this island beholds. Its portrayal is something that should be celebrated, yet there is a sense among many that something was missing. The positive WHY haven’t religious organisations shown leadership in the housing crisis? They have the potential to inspire an army of volunteers wanting to demonstrate their belief in compassion and charity. Throw open the doors to their churches, halls, retreats etc and care for the homeless. It would appear this is perhaps a crazy concept. They hide behind government funding contracts and institutional constraints. Imagine if religious leaders, who are all well fed and tucked up safe, warm and cosy in their beds, behaved in a selfless and loving manner to the disadvantaged.

Police intersections

THE story on red light cameras ( Mercury, June 16) made me wonder where Tasmania Police “traffic, general duties and other members” are when I witness daily cyclists, motorbikes and motor vehicles proceed at an intersection against a red light. Now everyone knows the red light cameras are not active, be prepared for more crashes at intersections. I can’t recall in the last month seeing any police at any intersection where there are traffic lights.
