Tassie’s architectural gems on show

- JARRAD BEVAN

AHEAD of next month’s Tasmanian Architecture Awards, Hobart residents will be able to catch a glimpse of the year’s finest projects at an exhibition in the city.

Tasmanians have also been invited to have their say on which project was the best of the past year by casting a vote in the People’s Choice prize.

The 2018 awards program attracted 43 entries from Tasmanian architects — the highest number of entries to date.

Australian Institute of Architects Tasmania chapter president Yvette Breytenbach said the quality of the work this year was “very high”.

Ms Breytenbach said the entries showed the hallmarks for which Tasmanian architecture was being recognised nationally and internationally such as “clever and innovative solutions” that meet and develop the client brief as well as achieving wonderful user experiences and value for money outcomes.

“Tasmanian architects are also known for beautiful detailing and craftsmanship showcasing local timbers and construction industry skills,” she said.

Ms Breytenbach said the awards highlight trends in the sector and the contribution architects make to the greater good of society and the economy.

This year’s winners will be announced on July 7. The exhibition at Brooke St Pier will be open from today until July 20.
