Exhibit outrages mum

A CONVICTED double murderer is trying to sell prison artworks at an exhibition in Hobart, the mother of one his victims believes.

Marco Daniel Rusterholz was to have received leave for educational and rehabilitation purposes on Monday.

The leave coincided with the Art From Inside exhibition, which is on at Mawson’s Pavilion.

Rusterholz’s leave was cancelled after it became known that he would be going on an excursion just three years after receiving a 45-year jail term for the murders of Angela Hallam and Joshua Newman in 2012.

Works bearing the name “Rusty” and “Marco R” are on display at the exhibition.

A woodwork mosaic mural has a price of $300 and a red sticker, commonly associated with an intended sale.

Heidi el Ozone, the mother of Joshua Newman, said she was shocked and disgusted by the exhibition.

“He has not even admitted what he did yet but is allowed to go around exhibiting as though he is bloody Picasso,” she said.

Ms el Ozone was angry when she heard that Rusterholz was to receive leave but said the exhibition was even more of a kick in the guts.

One of the mosaics contains a passage from the 1599 Geneva Bible.

Tasmanian Prisoners Legal Service chairman Greg Barns said leave was an important component of prisoner rehabilitation.

“It’s extremely important that all prisoners have access to all rehabilitation services available, including leave outside the prison environment, irrespective of the time the prisoner is serving ” Mr Barns said.

For privacy reasons, the Tasmania Prison Service does not comment on the circumstances of individual prisoners.
