Space for a spit and polish

SYDNEY hip-hop duo Spit Syndicate have blasted off on a national tour to launch their fifth album — and they’ll be orbiting Tasmania this weekend. Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice earned themselves an ARIA Award nomination for their debut album Towards the Light when they were fresh out of high school back in 2008, before Exile (2010) and Sunday Gentlemen (2013) cemented Spit Syndicate as one of Australia’s most respected and beloved hiphop outfits.

Barely a year after releasing their critically acclaimed fourth album One Good Shirt Had Us All Fly, Spit Syndicate returned last month with their most forward-thinking record yet, Orbit.

“Our approach to making this album was like a mix-tape — we weren’t thinking about singles, radio or even how we’d be releasing the music,” Nice says.

“That allowed us to be weightless, almost childlike in our approach.

“We arrived back at the essence of why we started creating songs. For that reason this album is our best yet.”

To celebrate the release of Orbit — which features the singles Errands, F--k It and Contraband & Conversation — Spit Syndicate have set off on their biggest ever national tour. They are playing 20 shows across the country with flamboyant Canberra singer/MC Turquoise Prince, who recently released his slinky new RnB single, Lighter.

Turquoise Prince broke through with his 2016 single Worlds Apart, and followed it up with Like Your Friends and Sunday Sesh last year, along with festival slots at Groovin The Moo, Listen Out and Spilt Milk, and tour supports for Horrorshow and Boo Seeka.

Spit Syndicate and Turquoise Prince play at the Republic Bar in North Hobart from 10pm tomorrow, then at Club 54 in Launceston on Saturday night. Tickets to the Hobart show are $23.30, go to www.moshtix.com.au for bookings.
