Thorne thrives in pumpkin patch

-

TWO acclaimed songwriters who share a Tasmanian connection, Dan Tuffy and Lucie Thorne, will be back in the state next week for a series of intimate concerts.

Tuffy played bass for ARIA Award-winning Tasmanian psychedelic folk band Wild Pumpkins at Midnight, relocating the group from Hobart to Melbourne in the late 1980s then London and finally the Netherlands.

With the Pumpkins officially cooked in 1998, Tuffy went on to form eclectic trio Big Low and Balkan music group Parne Gadje.

Tuffy released his solo debut album of alt-country tunes, Songs From Dan, to critical praise early last year.

Now he’s back in Australia for a series of shows with Thorne, who grew up in Launceston before moving to Melbourne at age 18.

Once hailed by Queensland’s Courier Mail as “Australia’s PJ Harvey … possessing the punch of Cat Power and the wise words of Joni Mitchell”, Thorne has 11 acclaimed releases to her name, swinging between dark, delicate folk and gritty rock ’n’ roll.

Dan Tuffy and Lucie Thorne play three shows in Tasmania next week, including two with Tuffy’s former Wild Pumpkins bandmate Michael Turner: a house concert in Upper Woodstock (with Claire Anne Taylor) from 6.30pm next Thursday (July 5); at the Copping Hall (with Turner) from 7pm on July 6; and at Saint John Craft Beer in Launceston (with Turner) from 8pm on July 7.

Tickets to all three shows are available from www.trybooking.com
