Barber’s cutting it fine

-

PREPARE to sink your teeth into Bijou Creative’s bloody tasty musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which opens in Hobart tonight.

It’s 1846, and after a stint in an Australian prison for a crime he didn’t commit, exiled barber Sweeney Todd is back in London — and he’s not here for a haircut.

Todd is hellbent on revenge, seeking vengeance against the dodgy judge who sent him away and then ravaged his young wife.

Things escalate when he meets Nellie Lovett, the resourceful owner of a failing pie shop.

Upstairs, Todd opens a barbershop … where clients get more than just a close shave. When Todd’s bloodlust inspires Lovett to add a new ingredient to her meat pies, the people of London start queuing up to buy them — and the carnage has only just begun!

Composed by Stephen Sondheim, Sweeney Todd has shocked and delighted audiences around the world since premiering on Broadway in 1979, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.

Directed by Karen Kluss, the Hobart production stars Scott Burns as Sweeney Todd, Nicole Simms Farrow as Nellie Lovett, and Scott Farrow as Tobais Ragg, plus Matthew Garwood, Chloe Evans, Paul Levett and more.

Bijou Creative presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Playhouse Theatre in Bathurst St from tonight until July 7.

Performances are at 8pm Tuesday-Sunday, plus afternoon matinees on July 1 and 7. Tickets are $54, $47 concession, phone 6234 5998 or go to www.centertainment.com.au for bookings.
