Healthy rivalry in Cup bid

- ADAM CLIFFORD

FIERCE rivals DiamondBacks and University are used to fighting for on-field success but will take the field this Sunday with another focus.

The clubs’ third-grade men’s sides will compete for their fourth annual Beyondblue Cup as part of the Southern Hockey League’s Mental Health Round. Creator Chris Rigby said the idea came after his own battle with depression and the experiences of those close to him.

“Personally, I have been through depression and like many others, family and friends of mine have gone through various stages of depression and anxiety,” Rigby said. “Playing hockey is so beneficial for your mental health and there wasn’t anything already established for this big issue, so it seemed appropriate because the sport is great for the mind, body and soul.

“Not only does it give you a great energy release when playing and training, but you are surrounded by a great bunch of people to share a laugh with and who will always be there for you.”

Rigby established the annual cup match in 2015 and what started as a simple idea has now grown much larger.

“The Big Blue Bash is now a full weekend of activities to fundraise and includes an event where mental health discussions are held, with guest speakers Joe Brooks from beyondblue and Triple J alumni Sarah Howells,” Rigby said.

While the Beyondblue Cup played at 1pm on Sunday remains the focal point of the weekend, the mental health discussion begins at noon on Saturday in the Olympians Room and coincides with a fundraiser barbecue. Saturday night also features a fundraising DJ event hosted by Howells at Post Street Social, with Rigby hoping to exceed their $5000 fundraising target.

“We would love the hockey and broader community to get involved by enjoying the great atmosphere over the weekend, participating in mental health discussions or by donating to the cause,” Rigby said.
