Puppets not as kids know them

- ROGER HANSON

A CHEEKY production featuring puppets you won’t find on Sesame Street playing for a mature audience has opened in Hobart.

The Hobart Repertory Theatre production Avenue Q runs at the Playhouse Theatre in Bathurst St until July 28, and tells the story of some lively and wacky characters who come together to share their lives.

The show follows freshfaced college graduate, Princeton, as he searches for a job, a place to stay and a way to discover his “purpose” in life along with his new neighbours on Avenue Q.

However, Avenue Q contains scenes which may be unsuitable for children aged under 15. So if your child isn’t old enough to see a musical that contains drinking, [puppet] sex and plenty of naughty words, then it’s time to call the babysitter.

The “adult in nature” show involves the cast working with puppets while singing and dancing.

It’s not easy being grownup – unemployment, political correctness, being homeless and intimate relations – are just some of the life lessons taught in this wonderful coming-of-age story about what it really means to be an adult.

After moving to an outer-outer borough, Princeton soon gets a real education when he meets a band of new friends: Kate (the single girl next door), Rod (the Republican with a secret), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy and many more curious and col- ourful folk, both the furry and non-furry kind.

The heartwarming show which opened in 2003 in New York, took home three Tony Awards, including for Best Musical.

Performances are at 8pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays, with afternoon matinees on July 22 and 28. Call 6234 5998 or go to www.centertainment.com.au for bookings.
