Arrows on target in big victory

- RENEE GODFREY

AYC-FRIENDS Arrows sent out a warning to the State League netball competition with a strong 64-44 win over Kingston Blues on Friday.

The game started with the teams going goal for goal before Arrows finished well to take a 15-12 lead into the break. Arrows carried the momentum into the second quarter, opening an 11-goal lead before Kingston got back to within seven, only for Arrows to finish the quarter strongly to hold a 33-23 halftime lead. Both teams continued to create chances in the third, with some great defensive efforts and were ably supported by their shooters, with Gemma Polley for Kingston and Sophie Gunn for Arrows shooting at 100 per cent.

Arrows went into the last quarter with a 46-34 lead.

With the game all but won, Arrows hit the accelerator, with Adrianna Gough exceptional at wing defence and Gunn unstoppable in goals.

Arrows coach Andrew Jackson was pleased with the result. “The win consolidates our position in second on the ladder and gives us a bit of a buffer over Kingston,” he said.

Kingston coach Erin Baker was pleased with her team’s defensive efforts.

“We’re disappointed to not have closed the gap on the scoreboard but we will still take away a number of positives.”

Karana had a 82-33 win over OHA; Cavaliers defeated Devon 58-28; and Northern Hawks had a commanding 99-41 win over Burnie Tigers.
