Police woman captures love in fairytale

- CHANEL KINNIBURGH

AFTER eight months of intense police training, new Constable Leah Hicks was given a graduation gift that made her heart skip a beat.

Ms Hicks’ partner Matthew Bricknell popped the question in a surprise video during an awards ceremony the day before her graduation from the Tasmania Police Academy on June 21.

Mr Bricknell said he came up with the elaborate proposal after realising it was the couple’s 10th anniversary on the same day as the awards.

“I contacted her teacher and asked if I could do a video proposing to Leah,” he said.

“When the other staff found out what I was up to they all wanted to be involved.”

The video shows Mr Bricknell ticking off a proposal checklist — which included getting fit and picking up a new suit — to Bruno Mars’ hit song Marry You.

With flowers in hand, Mr Bricknell can be seen trying to reach Ms Hicks on a number of occasions during her police training classes but officers always catch him and turn him away.

“It ended up better than I ever planned in my head,” Mr Bricknell said.

“I’ve already been told by a few guys at my work that I’ve made their lives a lot harder.”

After the video finished, Mr Bricknell dashed into the hall and got down one knee before asking Ms Hicks if she’ll be his wife.

“It was a complete surprise, I had no idea he was there when we were filming all those training activities,” Ms Hicks said.

“It’s amazing that he went to all that effort, while still holding down our family and managing to keep his own job.”
