Bloods count cost of horror Cats game

JARRAD McVeigh’s hopes of playing on next year have plummeted, with collarbone surgery likely to keep him out for six weeks.

The Swans’ horror night against Geelong had a shocking aftermath yesterday, with Dan Hannebery likely to miss up to a month with a calf strain.

McVeigh had collarbone surgery yesterday after it broke tackling Quinton Narkle, with Lewis Melican tearing his hamstring for the fourth time this year at training this week.

The only good news surrounds Kieren Jack (medial ligament), with Sydney yet to rule him out against North Melbourne given a 10-day break between games.

McVeigh’s manager Phil Mullen said this week that McVeigh was still keen to play on next year alongside Heath Grundy.

Mullen was open to that possibility this week given McVeigh’s strong form in defence: “The dialogue is really open. We had a discussion with Jarrad last year as well and when he does finish up he will transition into coaching.”

But the 33-year-old was expected to have to make every post a winner to prove to the Swans he was capable of playing on.

Harley estimated yesterday McVeigh would be out until several weeks before the AFL’s finals series.

“It is always difficult this far out to put a hard and fast prognosis on it but we will say six weeks,” he said.

Hannebery had been in a horror stretch of form after last year’s osteitis pubis as well as calf and groin strains.
